March 14, 2018 - Suggested Reading 2nd Service Proverbs 29

“Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.”

I have a memory of getting in trouble on a school bus ride as a grade 2 student for yelling out- “Happy Birthday stiff neck” in response to our bus driver asking us to sing Happy Birthday to my older sister Ginny. I deserved the trouble I received for I was acting out of envy towards my sister who was the bus driver’s favourite student, (she was a good girl) – and the stiff neck comment was brutal - for my sister was being treated for scoliosis by wearing a full brace that cupped her chin and held her neck in one position.
God is not calling us “stiff necked” to harm us – He is pointing out that we have our neck fixed in such a position so as to prevent our head from turning towards Him and following after His commands. It is not a metal brace that stops our necks from turning- it is a brace of stubbornness and rebellion, that stops our head from turning to our Saviour.
Our compassionate and gracious God who is slow to anger delivers many personal rebukes, until one day we will be destroyed without remedy.
But friend – that day is not today- or you would not be reading this.
There is still time for us to apply the remedy found in Scripture.
Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, turn to him and be saved from destruction.
