“Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.”
Psalm 127:1 (NIV)
A family psalm!
Yes, it is a psalm of ascent- its purpose is to prepare us to enter into the Holy City, the Holy Temple, to meet God Himself. What better way for a mother or a father, a grandfather or a grandmother to approach the Lord in worship then to remind themselves that the individuals in our families need more than us, more than our help to thrive, to succeed- that this Lord we worship is willing to build and to guard our families! Family is a lot of work, and the sleep that God grants us is a blessing, as much as the children He gives us are a reward. I have repeated this prayer to our God many times, in faith believing His Word that each of our children are a blessing from Him. The lesson of this psalm is that all of our hard efforts will be for nothing (vain), unless we involve the LORD. Not that we have no work to do- but that His is the most important work! Let us approach the throne of grace today- asking our gracious Lord to build our families, and to guard each individual life. Let us surrender our family to Him as an act of worship.
