“As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart.”
Verse 2 of this chapter tells us of the significance of the ark to David, when it describes the ark as being the place where LORD Almighty is enthroned. David ‘s psalms are filled with this longing to be blessed by the Presence of the LORD Almighty. Yet this account of the ark being brought into David’s city is very sobering. The first attempt ends with the death of Uzzah who dared to touch the ark. The second and successful attempt ends with the estrangement of David from his first wife Michal. To be despised by your wife is a terrible spot for a husband to be in. To despise your husband in your heart has to be a terrible place to be in as a wife. Despise is defined as “feel contempt or a deep repugnance for”, and it absolutely is a marriage killer. I have no words of wisdom for spouses who have found themselves in the opposite situation from the place of mutual love and respect- other than to point out that this story is about the manifest presence of the LORD coming into our lives, and surely we need more of the LORD and His blessing in our marriage today!
Come Lord Jesus come, help us to be the spouse you want us to be.
