"These things happened to them as examples and
were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has
come."
{1 Corinthians 10:11} (NIV 1984)
This
passage of Scripture serves as the key to understanding the relationship
between the history of Israel and the Christian church. Paul tells us that they
were in fellowship with Christ. He compares them to us and then warns us of
what will happen if we persist in the sins they committed. He mentions
idolatry, sexual immorality, testing the Lord, and grumbling against God. Paul
makes it clear that God killed them and his warning is straightforward; be
careful- don’t make the mistakes they made.
Do we live in fear, trembling that
we will fall into temptation? No- we pray as Jesus taught; “Father, lead me not
into temptation, but deliver me from evil.” And we look for the way out of the
temptation- “For God is faithful;… when you are tempted, he will provide a way
out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
