Nov 14, 2017- Suggested Reading 1st Service Psalm 143

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God;
may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”

David is in one of those situations that made David into the hero of Israel’s songs. Have any of us ever been in the terrible situation that David describes? Dwelling in the ground like a dead person, while hiding from our powerful enemies? He is in a dire place- his spirit grows faint, his spirit fails - with no hope unless the morning brings him word of God’s unfailing love. David is not speaking here of the intangible, perhaps a song, or a note of encouragement coming his way, or even of his faith becoming stronger. David is speaking here of the tangible, of God changing David’s reality, of God moving in power in such a way that David’s faith becomes sight. David is crying out in desperate need, his faith is evident in every line, he remembers what God has done in the past, and it brings him to a place where he got a glimpse of a future. In that future, he asks to be taught by God to do God’s will, to be led on level paths by God’s good Spirit. Oh friend let us not wait to be in a situation like David’s to pray this verse- may this be our prayer today and every day from now until we meet our Lord.
