"As goods increase, so do those who consume
them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them?"
{Ecclesiastes 5:11} (NIV1984)
Words from
3,000 years ago that describe our society to a T! Solomon teaches us that as
the supply of goods increases, so the number of people who will buy them
increases. This describes Costco’s business plan, Wal-Mart’s business plan and
the business plans of most of the successful retailers of our age. This
describes the folly of money and possessions.
Why do we buy the things we do?
Why do we reach into our wallet and buy things that we never use, we just look
at them and derive some “benefit” from knowing that we have them? We can blame
the slick marketers, and great merchandising, or we can look to where the real
problem lies. We can look at ourselves and realize that the marketing and
merchandising only work on people who seek fulfillment and meaning in
possessions, that not only won’t last, but that we don’t even need. Talk about
meaningless! Talk about vanity! O friend, let each of us examine ourselves
honestly in this area today.
Precious Holy Spirit, search us we pray, show
us the deceit within us. Help us today!
