1 Corinthians 10:14-23

"Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."
{Exodus 34:14} (NIV1984

Do we truly know this God whom we worship? As we meditate on the truths that He is love, that He is faithful, that He is gracious, that He is merciful, that He is strong and many more of His attributes, He becomes more and more beautiful to us! Each attribute is like a precious stone that reveals more of its beauty as we gaze deep into it.

What does it mean that God is jealous? More than that, that His name is Jealous? At first glance we think of jealousy as a negative feature of a person, and we shy away from considering God as jealous. Looking a little deeper we start to understand that this reflects His great love for us. We are the “apple of His eye” (Zech 2:8). He is not willing to share us with anyone else, just as a loving spouse is not willing to share their spouse.

To think that we can worship God on Sunday and worship another god on Monday is to not understand the character of God. He is a jealous God. He wants us to willingly give Him all of our worship and all of our love. This description of God being jealous demonstrates for us in another way the depth of His love for us. It makes me ask Him the questions, 'Why do You want my love and worship?' 'Why do You care about me?' 'Why do you love me so?'
