Psalm 22:12-18

"When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots."
Matthew 27:35  (NIV1984)

This Scripture reveals to us that our Lord submitted to His clothes being stolen. Humans have been covered by garments since God made Adam and Eve skin coverings, when He removed them from the garden. To take someone’s garments from them is prohibited by God’s Law (Ex. 22:26,27).

Our Lord died exposed to the elements and to the humans and spirits who were watching Him. The Bible teaches us that He knew before the creation of the world that He would die this way, that it was part of His plan of salvation. This is amazing love! That He would submit to this indignity for us. That He would not only turn the other cheek, but that He would give up His clothes, and be humiliated in this way! This is perfect love!

Oh friend, be encouraged today as we gaze in our mind’s eye at the love of our Saviour in action. He demonstrated His perfect love for us, in not only dying, but also in how He died. In the Old Testament, a priest who offers a sacrifice must be dressed in a way to give him dignity and honour (Ex. 28:2). Our Lord died in humiliation and indignity. May we who love Him, honour Him this day! May we not disgrace the One, who suffered disgrace for us!
