Hebrews 1:1-4

  "Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?”"
{Matthew 26:67,68}  (NIV1984)

Herod couldn't lay a hand on Jesus: God kept Him safe. (Mt. 2) The people in Nazareth wanted to seize Him and kill Him, but He walked right through them (Lk. 4). The chief priests wanted to arrest Him but they couldn't for fear of the people (Mt. 21). The soldiers sent to arrest Him had to be encouraged by Jesus to do so (Jn. 18). Yet now, they slap Him, and spit on Him.

We make a mistake when we think of our Lord as a victim. He was not a victim in the sense that He was unable to stop them or respond to them in a powerful way. If Jesus was a victim, He was a willing victim. He could have responded by crushing these evil men, but He choose to turn the other cheek, to willingly suffer for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. To suffer for His Father's glory and for our salvation.

Oh Lord you're beautiful, your face is all I see. For when your eyes are on this child, your grace abounds to me. {Keith Green, 1980}
