Matthew 3:13-17

"And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love;
with him I am well pleased.""
{Matthew 3:17} (NIV1984

The Father spoke these words to His people. An audible voice spoken loud enough to be heard over the chatter by the river. There was no mistaking it; the Almighty God is a Father who is loves His Son and is pleased with His Son. He spoke it while His Son was present. There is a beautiful mystery to the delight that each member of the Holy Trinity takes in each other. They delight in each other and this is just one example of it in scripture. But there is a lesson for us in this account, especially for fathers.

Have we ever spoken the words - “I love you and am pleased with you” - out loud, in the presence of witnesses and our child? Have we given our child the blessing that our Lord’s Father gave Him? This is an area most of us need to work on. Some of us are very free in this area of spoken affirmation, but many of us are sadly delinquent. It may be that our behaviour was learned. Our fathers didn’t speak like this around us or our siblings. Let’s take our eyes off our earthly father, and place them on the example set for us by our heavenly Father. May we today, or this weekend; give public, verbal affirmation to our children. May they know that we delight in them!
