Luke 11:1-13

"If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
{Luke 11:13}  (NIV1984)

Our Lord uses what we know about fathers on earth, to teach us a tremendous truth about our Father in heaven. Just as a father is careful to give gifts that help and do not harm, so too, our heavenly Father will give good gifts to those who ask Him. The best gift that does the most good for us is the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Some of us may think, “Well my father never gave me anything good; he did me harm, so the Lord’s lesson is not helpful.” Friend, listen to the Lord as He calls us evil. Our human fathers are evil. Every human, that is a father, is evil. But our heavenly Father is good and only good. He is good all the time, and we should approach Him as a good Father, expecting Him to give us good gifts. Jesus teaches us to pray, calling Him Father, asking Him for our daily needs.

Do not fear, friend, that God will harm you. No! Never! God will do you good, not harm. As you come to Him in prayer, have that confidence that you will be answered and that the answer will be good. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17).

Oh friend let us take our requests to Him today!
“Our Father who art in heaven …”
