"A father to the
fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling."
{Psalm 68:5} (NIV1984)
When we
see a person, we automatically think they have a father. There must have been a
man involved in order for there to be a child, and so we assume that each
person has a father.
The truth is, there are many who are fatherless. Sure
there was a man involved in their conception, but there is no man involved in
their lives as a father. There is no one who protects, who disciplines, who
encourages, who tells them to be all they can be. There is no one providing
shelter, food, clothing, or gifts. It may be that they never knew their father.
It may be that their father died. It may be that their father is an evil man
who hurts them. However they became fatherless, God takes responsibility for
them. He declares 'I am a father to the fatherless'. God calls all who are His
to take up this responsibility with Him. If we are God's, we will care for those
around us who have no father. God’s work is to be a Father to the fatherless.
May we be involved in God’s work today! As I write this, I think of Charles
Mully and his work in Kenya; a father to the fatherless. A man who is willing
to allow God to do His work through him. An example for us.
Sing to
God, sing praise to His name,
extol Him who rides on the clouds —
His name is the Lord —
and rejoice before Him. {Psalm 68:4}
