"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is yet to come."
{John 16:13} NIV 1984
It seems clear in the Bible that God spoke to Adam, Eve and Cain with an audible voice. Less clear is how He spoke to Enoch and Noah. It seems clear that He spoke to Abram with an audible voice, but less clear with Rebekah. It is very clear that God spoke to Moses and the assembly with an audible voice, but Joshua, although he was in the tent while God spoke to Moses, seems to have received his instructions through an intermediary.
Samuel heard an audible voice, but did David? Elijah heard the still small voice, the audible whisper of God, but Daniel was spoken to by an angel, and the voice Ezekial heard in his vision was a sound like rushing waters.
In these days of grace, these last days, God speaks to us through His Son (Heb. 1:2). The people of Israel heard the audible voice of the Son of God, and the audible thunderous voice of the Father on two occasions. The apostle Paul heard the audible voice of the glorified Lord and yet John 15 and 16 teach us that His Son speaks to us through the Holy Spirit.
Do you remember the sound of His voice when He convicted you of sin, righteousness and judgment? Do you remember how clear your course of action was to you? Oh friend, I trust that you have heard His voice speaking to you since then! God is certainly ABLE to speak into our lives...but are we listening?
