John 14:15-31

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
{Luke 2:14} (NIV1984)

Peace is more than a political arrangement between two governments to cease hostilities. Peace is more than just quiet or stillness. Peace is more than a lack of striving against a person (even ourselves) or something. Peace is harmony between two persons! Harmony involves unity, mutual respect, mutual consideration, mutual sacrifice, mutual appreciation, mutual goals, mutual pain, and mutual love.

This is the “good news” the shepherds heard! Through this child who was born, peace would be brought to those people, on whom God’s favour rests. Not peace between nations, or people, which would be awesome all by itself, but peace between sinful alienated people and their Holy, Most High Creator. That this Creator would desire harmony between Himself and His creation seems reasonable in a way. But that this Creator would make peace by Himself, not a two way, negotiated settlement between two warring parties, but a sacrificial, humble peace plan that included the Creator making Himself nothing; being born into oppression, and handing Himself over to wicked men and Satan himself.

This is not reasonable at all - this is AMAZING. This is GOOD NEWS. May we join the angels and the shepherds and give God the glory! Praise His Holy Name.
