Hebrews 1 & 2

"Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying..."
{Luke 2:13} (NIV1984)

What an amazing scene this must have been! When I read of scenes like this, I wish Jesus had been born in this age of digital photography; and yet I suspect that this would have been one of those scenes that a picture doesn’t capture in its fullness. I am really looking forward to seeing these heavenly beings, who are part of God’s creation. I wish I had the eyes of Elisha who could see these spiritual beings all around him. They are all around us! According to Hebrews 1 they are ministering spirits sent to serve God’s children. The first mention of them is in the account of Hagar’s distress, which brings the thought that we could see Hagar in heaven. They rejoice when a sinner repents; they carry God’s children to His side when they die; they bring God’s wrath to bear in judgment on this fallen world and the wicked people who inhabit it. Their pictures were woven into the curtain that enclosed the most Holy Place, and their images were cast in gold on the atonement cover of the Ark of the Covenant, where God’s manifest Presence dwelt. They are higher than us in every way! Yet the Saviour, God’s only Son came to save us, not them!

“What is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?”
