Jeremiah 10

"The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the Lord; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered."
{Jeremiah 10:21} (NIV1984)

'Shepherd' in this verse means a leader of Israel. David their king ‘shepherded Israel’. (Ps. 78:72) The kings and leaders that followed David were ‘shepherds’ of Israel. The leaders of Israel had stopped going to God for wisdom. They had stopped asking God to direct them in the daily affairs of the nation, and therefore destruction was coming upon the whole nation and they would be uprooted from their homes, their livelihoods, and their families.

As parents, we are leaders in our families. Do we ask God to direct us (give us wisdom) in the daily affairs of our families? Most of us are leaders in some regard, in some aspect of our lives. Those of us who don’t lead others are the leaders of ourselves. Do we go to God for guidance, for direction? Do we ask Him to direct our ways? Do we spend any effort at all, seeking to hear from Him? We should friend. We should go to Him each day and ask Him to direct our ways; ask Him for the wisdom we need as we make decisions for ourselves and others.

Jeremiah knew the truth and so he wrote in vs 23, “I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.” May we know this truth, and may we act on it each day.
