Psalm 51

"And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."
{Mark 11:25} (NIV1984)

David prays for forgiveness. He cries out for mercy. He asks God to deal with him according to His love and compassion. David expects God to forgive and to purify him. In faith, because of his belief in the character of God and the heart of God, he asks and expects God to work in his life and change his inner desires. He goes further even than that; he prays and expects God to bless the city that he lives in and the kingdom that he is responsible for.

David knows the heart of God and the power that God releases into the lives of those who confess their sins. Our Lord knows the heart of God. He came from God’s side to earth to teach us how to be reconciled with God. He taught us to pray for the forgiveness of sins, and to expect in faith for our sins to be forgiven.

What a blessing it is to worship a God who forgives our sins on the basis of the sacrifice of His Son! May we remember today as we ask Him to forgive us, that we are required to forgive everyone else. Not a superficial forgiveness; not a pretend forgiveness. But a forgiveness that comes from our heart, just as He forgives us.
