"...Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will
be joyful in God my Savior."
{Habakkuk 3:18} (NIV1984)
Friend, if
there ever was time that didn’t make sense to a Christian, Habakkuk’s time was
it. Everything was upside down. As this godly man complained to God, God
answered him, and the answer caused Habakkuk more distress. Things weren’t
going to get better; no things were going to get worse! This upset him so he
complained again and God answered him with, "Woe, Woe,
Woe, Woe, Woe" and then “The LORD is in His holy temple, let all
the earth be silent before Him."
God is in
His holy temple. He sits on a throne over heaven and earth, and He is holy and
righteous in all He does, and all He allows to be done and in how He treats
every single human. No one will be able to bring a complaint against Him for He
has acted righteously to all. This thought caused Habakkuk to write one of the
most wonderful worship passages in the Bible, and in my mind, the most profound
worship sentence ever written:
"Though the
fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive
crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful
in God my Savior."
Friend,
whatever situation you may be in, however difficult it is, however bleak the
future looks, do not allow that to take away the joy of your salvation. We
have a choice, Habakkuk chose to rejoice in his God. May we choose the same.
