"By faith Abraham, when God tested him,
offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to
sacrifice his one and only son..."
{Hebrews 11:17} (NIV1984)
Sacrifice
is defined by Merriam Webster as: a). an act of offering to a
deity something precious b). destruction or surrender of something
for the sake of something else c). something given up or lost.
Sacrifice
is an essential part of true Biblical worship. Abraham knew this, and he had
built alters, offered sacrifices and worshiped the One True God. He killed
animals and burnt their bodies on alters that were consecrated to God. They
were his animals, the best of his flocks, deliberately destroyed in an act of
worship.
The Bible tells us that God wanted to test Abraham, it seems that God
wanted to know if Abraham truly loved Him, or if the gift that God had given
Abraham had replaced God in Abraham’s heart. It is important to recognize that
Abraham didn’t know that it was a test. All he knew was that this God who had called
him out of his homeland, who told him that He loved him, and who had sworn to
him that Abraham would have many descendants, was now telling him to destroy
his son whom he loved. Abraham worshiped God by offering his son as a
sacrifice.
Friend, do we have the worshiper heart that Abraham had? Is there
anything in our lives that is “untouchable”? True worshipers lay everything at
the foot of the cross and tell their God that they want His Will to be done in
everything in their lives. May we bless His Name this day.
