"For it
is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory
in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—"
{Philippians 3:3} (NIV1984)
Words cannot
adequately describe the nature of the gift that God gives at the point of our
conversion. We talk about our wonderful salvation and the gift of everlasting
life, and grace and glory, but to adequately describe the nature of the gift we
are given, requires that we describe God Himself, for He gives us His Holy
Spirit.
He, Himself works our salvation. He, Himself sanctifies us from the
inside out. He, Himself speaks assurance to us, telling us that we are His
children. He, Himself convicts us of sin, and leads us into repentance and rest.
He, Himself (what a blessing this thought is) God, Himself provides the surety
for our salvation. He made Himself the deposit guaranteeing our inheritance in
His kingdom. He, Himself groans and intercedes for us. He, Himself counsels us,
leads us, speaks to us while we are sleeping.
Oh Friend, the grace of God the
Father shows to us through the death and resurrection of His Son our Lord
Jesus, and shows to us through the precious gift of His Spirit, the Holy Spirit
who saves us by entering us and cutting off the old nature and creating a new
person. We are now free to worship God by the Spirit of God. This was the
apostle John’s experience, “on the Lord’s Day, I was in the Spirit” (Rev
1:10). May it be our experience today. May we worship our great and gracious God
by the Spirit of God.
