"But I have stilled
and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother,
like a weaned child
is my soul within me."
{Psalm 131:2} (NIV1984)
There is a
time when a mother weans her child. The child has come to a place in its
growth, where the mother decides it is time to keep the baby from her breast.
The baby has nursed its whole life. All the baby knows is the comfort of the
breast and the warm milk. The baby is unaware that the time has come, and cries
for the breast, but the mother is steadfast and weans the child. Now when the
baby is held by the mother, he is still, not wiggling and squirming to get what
he wants from her. The baby is now able to enjoy the arms of his mother in a
way that was not possible before.
David knew of this truth in his spiritual
life. There was a time when he wiggled and squirmed in the arms of God,
desiring to get what he wanted. But he has now come to the place in his
spiritual life, where he is content to sit quietly in the presence of God.
Simply content with the knowledge that God is his and he is God’s. Not seeking
knowledge or answers to questions too great for him. But simply quiet before
his God, still (at rest), confident that he can trust this God to care for him.
O Heavenly Father, may we find this place today, the place of quietness and
stillness in your presence.
