“Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.”
Exodus 18:15 (NIV)
Jethro gave Moses some wise advice, and Moses the leader of this vast nation, demonstrated his humility by listening to his father-in-law’s advice and implementing it. There is much to learn in this chapter about administering justice, settling disputes, and organizing large groups of God’s people BUT I would like us to consider the goal of the people who appeared before Moses. “They came before Moses to seek God’s will.” We shake our heads at the Israelites- for their propensity to sin, their stubbornness, and inability to trust God, but will we be humble enough this morning to learn from them about the proper approach to disputes with other Christians? They came in large numbers to stand before Moses to see God’s will done, not their will! Disputes among God’s people are inevitable but our approach, our mindset is a choice - so what will it be? Do we seek God’s will today or our will today?
Oh that we might seek God’s will!
