“So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
What a blessing it is to read of the disciples’ interactions with the Lord and to be able to learn spiritual lessons from their interactions! Here we learn clearly that the absence of the Lord brings grief, and that the presence of the Lord brings joy that no one can take away. In the disciples’ specific situation, they will experience grief when the Lord is crucified and buried, and they will experience joy when they see the resurrected Lord. This joy they experience will not leave them even though the Lord will leave them again to enter into heaven at the right hand of God. For us we learn that unless we grieve over the Lord’s crucifixion, we will not experience joy when we see Him with spiritual eyes. Truly the ones who rejoiced over the death of the Lord were not able to see Him, and so it is today, the only way you will ever see Him with the spiritual eyes of faith, is after you grieve over the truth that your sin has separated you from the Lord.
Oh heavenly Father, may you send us the Spirit of truth, to convict us regarding sin, righteousness and judgement. Bring us grief that we may see Him clearly, and receive the joy that no one can take away.
