Psalm 20

“‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
{Matthew 22:32} (NIV1984)

Our Lord is declaring to His enemies that Jacob is alive. To teach that Jacob is alive, is to declare the truth of the resurrection. The truth is that while we wait for the resurrection of our bodies, we are alive with God. Every single Israelite is descended by blood from this one man, Jacob. Abram had other sons than Isaac. Isaac had Esau as well as Jacob. But all of Jacob’s descendants are Israelites.

The God of Jacob is the God of patience, grace and love. He is the God who appeared on earth to a man stressed out beyond measure. He is the God who allowed that man in distress to wrestle with Him. He is the God who crippled Jacob for the rest of his life on earth, and blessed Jacob beyond measure for all eternity. He is the Living God, and therefore all who are His are alive! Are you His? Is the God of Jacob your God? David knew this truth; that when he was in distress, he would call out to the God of Jacob, and the name of the God of Jacob would protect him.

May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
