Psalm 20

“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.
This is my gospel.”
{2 Timothy 2:8} (NIV 1984)

David wrote Psalm 20, in response to the prayers of the people, for God to protect and deliver the kings of Israel. These kings were descendants of David by blood and were anointed to serve as king in his place.

To truly understand the importance of Psalm 20, we must understand who our Lord Jesus Christ is. Jesus of Nazareth is descended from David by blood. He is the blood descendant of King David who wrote this song. More than being related by blood, He is the Christ. The English word Christ is an alliteration of the Greek word khris-tos which means anointed one.
Paul, here in 2 Timothy 2:8, clearly identifies Jesus of Nazareth as the descendant of David and the Anointed One. This is the bedrock of our faith. Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God. As we ponder this truth, does it not bring new meaning to this psalm? This prayer is not only a prayer of people who lived during the monarchies of Israel. This prayer is also the prayer of Christians living today as we approach God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

May the God of Jacob remember the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus as we approach His throne of grace today.
