Psalm 130

"If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O LORD, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared."
{Psalm 130:3,4} (NIV1984)

Who could stand before the LORD without forgiveness? Could you stand? No you can’t! I can’t stand; no one can stand before the LORD without forgiveness! This is a great doctrine of the Bible. The doctrine that no one is righteous, not a single human - ever. Each one of us deserves to die and we all need forgiveness in order to stand before God.

Abel understood this truth, so he approached God on God’s terms. He sought forgiveness through the blood of an animal and received God’s favour. Cain rejected this truth, so he approached God on his own terms, no blood involved, and he was rejected.

The LORD is a God who forgives sins, and destroys the record of those sins. He is a Holy God who offers forgiveness to all who come before Him with a sacrifice of blood. Those of us who have our sins forgiven through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, fear our God. We know His forgiveness and we know the cost He paid, and so we order our lives in such a way that we honour Him. We seek righteousness in our lives. We seek His will above ours.

What a great God we worship! A God who maintains love to thousands, forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin (Ex 34:6). May we seek His face today! May we approach His throne of grace with confidence!
