"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you
through his poverty might become rich."
2 Corinthians 8:9 (NIV1984)
When we
read our Lord’s teaching about laying up treasures, serving God not Money, and
then not worrying about food or clothing, it seems pretty plain that we are not
to live our lives focused on getting possessions for ourselves. Rather we are
to live our lives solely for the purpose of pleasing our heavenly Father.
Self-interest is pretty strong, and sometimes we reject this teaching of our
Lord. Our minds tell us that if we don’t look after ourselves no one will look
after us. You have heard, I am sure, the old adage, “God helps those who help
themselves.” Paul reminds us in this verse (as he encourages us to give our
money to other people), that our Lord became poor so that we may become rich.
Our Lord knows what hunger is (40 days of hunger), our Lord knows what nakedness
is (He hung naked on a cross). Our Lord knows what homelessness feels like
(foxes have holes, but he had no place to lay His head). He trusted His Father,
and He gave all He had so that others would benefit. Of our Lord this adage was
true, “God helps those who help others.”
May we be true disciples of the Lord
Jesus. May we be willing to give all we have for others, trusting in our
heavenly Father, to supply our needs.
