"David burned with anger against the man and
said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to
die!"
{2 Samuel 12:5} (NIV1984)
Most
Christians reserve the right to exhibit “righteous” anger. Our thought process
goes like this, “I am angry because of the sin, not because of the person. Surely God is angry too. All I am doing is channeling God’s anger.”
David’s
depth of worship and spiritual life, is an example to us all. He loved God and worshiped Him only! The sin that was described to him by Nathan, was the sin
of envy, theft, and mistreatment of a “lessor” by a “greater” - which is abuse
of position. The harsh response of David seems justified until Nathan points
out that David is that man!
We wonder if David’s harsh response is connected to his “blindness” to his own grievous sin. When we consider our Lord telling us
to remove the timber from our eye before we deal with a speck in our brother’s
eye (Matt 7), we begin to understand that anger at sin in others, indicates sin that is not confessed in us. We wonder, how could David not see his sin? Why did the
Spirit not show him his sin? David tells us that the fault was his; he kept
silent. (Ps 32). May David’s response be our response: "Then I
acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity." (Ps 32:5)
