Deuteronomy 6

"And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.”
{Deuteronomy 6:25} (NIV1984)

God promised Abram that He would cause Abram’s descendants to be numerous, and that He would give them the land of Canaan, where they would prosper (Ge 15). Although many people believe that the Old Testament has a different message than the New Testament, it is amazing how similar the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:33 are to the message of Deuteronomy 6. The promise of land, food, clothing - our basic needs - is conditional on our attitude toward God and His commands. If they obey His law, He will provide; if we seek His kingdom and righteousness, He will provide.
The Bible does not contain two different messages, but one unified message. It contains the words of life. If we obey these words, we have life now and eternal life to come. If we disobey these words, we get death now and eternal death to come.
This verse gives us the definition of the word 'righteousness' found in Matthew 6:33. Friend, may we seek this type of righteousness today! May we put our thoughts and our energies into knowing the Word and obeying the Word!

Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

  1. We do need to put more energy into knowing the Word and less energy into things that don't count for eternity!
