"In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came to His ears."
2 Samuel 22:7 (NIV)
David desired to build a temple in Jerusalem, yet this verse shows us that he knew that the true temple of God is not on this earth. He wasn't allowed to build the temple, and yet the LORD heard him from His temple and He moved heaven and earth to rescue David and give him victory.
David already knew what Hebrews 8 teaches us, that the tabernacle/template was only a shadow of the real temple in heaven. David danced when the Ark of the Covenant entered the City of David. He made plans for the temple. He stored up materials for its construction. He wrote songs and organized musicians. David poured energy, time and money into the earthly structure that the LORD had promised to consecrate by His Holy Presence, and yet David knew that the true dwelling place of God is in His temple in heaven.
Friend, we don't worship a God made by our imaginations, contained in an earthly building that rots away. Our God is above everything and everybody else. He sits enthroned in the heavens far above all gods. Yet He sits in His heavenly temple, in the place where mere mortals can access Him; a place of meeting, a place of worship, a place where His grace meets our needs as we call out to Him. How can it be that a human voice can reach the ear of God who is higher than the heavens? GRACE my friend. GRACE!
