“To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”
John 2:16 (NIV)
Giving money is an act of worship.
Making money off of God’s people in the place where God’s people gather to worship brings punishment from our Lord. This type of activity is obviously unacceptable to our Lord.
Do we dare say that He was angry?
The issue is that we turn His house – His temple- His church into a market.
This type of behaviour is what prompted Martin Luther to put up his notice on Halloween – right before the “best” money making days for the Roman Catholic Church. We have just celebrated the 500th anniversary of that event- and yet I wonder- are we really free from this type of wicked behaviour in 2017 in our churches?
Achan’s sin was connected to wealth, Ananias and Sapphira’s sin was connected to wealth, our Lord whipped people (that would hurt) who put money ahead of God’s people and Nehemiah 5 records that his type of behaviour got Nehemiah worked up as well.
Don’t be found by our Lord making money off God’s people in the place God’
people gather to worship.
people gather to worship.
Be found by the Lord giving money to the place God’s people gather to worship,
as an act of our worship.
as an act of our worship.
