“he said, “Listen to my words: “When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams.”
Numbers 12:6 (NIV)
God speaks thru prophets. He speaks to them a message for His people and they speak His message to His people. Serious business – with dire consequences for those who claim to speak for God, but speak out of their imaginations. We generally think of prophets as people who foretell the future, which is only part of their work. The bulk of what the prophets spoke and wrote are written that we might trust God, believe His Word is true and live our lives accordingly. The Scriptures contain some of the Words that God gave some of His prophets – all the words we need for salvation, but not all the Words He gave His prophets. Exodus records that His people begged for God to speak to a prophet, who would then speak to them, they were terrified of God speaking to them directly. It seems in this day and age that many want direct revelation from God, instead of reading the Words He has given us in the bible for Life. God treated Moses differently then all of His prophets, for He spoke to Moses face to face. The LORD spoke to all of His other prophets, Old or New Testament thru visions and dreams. As I read this chapter and ponder how God spoke to various people throughout the ages, my mind goes to our Lord- it is clear that He had a direct line to the Father, the Father heard Him, answered Him, and the Lord heard the Father and obeyed Him. But what did face to face mean in Moses day? From what I see in Scripture our Lord came from heaven (face to face) lived, prophesied, died and rose from the grave without any face to face (except the Mount of Transfiguration), BUT then ascended on high – back to face to face.
May we listen to Him- God’s last Word to all of us.
