"Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For
it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’"
{Matthew 4:10} (NIV1984)
Our Lord
came from His Father’s side. He knew all about Him; He knew Him intimately. Our
Lord loves His Father. He loves Him with a love that is greater than any other
love. Because our Lord knew His Father and loved His Father, He knew that
Satan’s offer to make Him king of kings if He served Satan, was an affront to
His Father.
In this temptation it seems as if Satan is on board with the
’mission’. The result of our Lord’s time on earth was becoming King
of Kings. Surely Satan is just honouring Him and serving God by offering to
help Jesus accomplish the ‘mission’! Satan is sly, but our Lord knew better. He
knew that His Father’s name is Jealous. He knew that to serve anyone other than
His Father was an affront and offense against His Father.
Friend, do we get
this? Are we being deceived by Satan in this area? Are we believing the lie
that it is okay to serve money, pleasure and self during the week, as long as we
serve God on Sunday? Oh that we would know our God, that we would love Him
only, and serve Him only.
