“If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.”
Hebrews 10:26-27 (NIV)
We love to compare the merits of the Old Covenant and the merits of the New Covenant we have in Christ. When we read words like - the law is only a shadow of things to come…
- we nod our heads yes and look forward to a longer discussion of what we have been given in Christ as compared to the Law, and it is wonderful, God’s grace in Christ Jesus is absolutely amazing!
we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ
by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those being made holy
where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sins is no longer necessary
These wonderful truths can be used by Satan to deceive us into thinking that our actions in this life no longer matter - and so the apostle adds a warning,
using the same comparative logic that greater grace given means greater punishment for those of us who keep deliberately sinning, after professing faith in Christ Jesus.
I think we make a mistake by rationalizing this text away, far better for us to accept its warning and then determine to be among those who persevere in Christ, rather than one of those who shrink away and are destroyed.
