1 Kings 19:1-15

"So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God."
{1 Kings 19:8}  (NIV1984)

I can’t imagine walking for forty days. Elijah was upset, he was depressed, and he was even suicidal. After an angel appeared and met his physical needs, Elijah sought out God’s face. He wanted to be in the presence of God, so he traveled to the mountain of God. All he wanted was to be heard by God. All he wanted was to spend time in the presence of the Holy One.

If you trace his journey on a map, he ran south from Israel to Beersheba in the southern part of Israel, rested, ate and continued into the wilderness until he reached Horeb. Once there, God spoke to him, and then told Elijah that He would pass by him. God was not in the wind! God was not in the earthquake! God was not in the fire! God was in the gentle whisper! Friend, know this truth today. God’s presence is communicated by His gentle whisper.

Friend, do you have need of the Holy One today? Do you need Him more than you need anything else?  Then friend, seek Him. Set everything else aside and seek Him! Listen for that still small voice and weep for joy, friend - for the Almighty God loves you, wants to spend time with you and has ministered to you. There is no god like Jehovah!

I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses and the voice I hear falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses… {"In the Garden", C. Austin Miles, 1912}
