"While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men
began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women."
{Numbers 25:1} (NIV1984)
As you
read through Numbers this verse strikes crossways. We have just read the
wonderful provision of God for His people. He turned curses into blessings! We
have just read that the enemies of God’s people are terrified of us! Then we
turn the page and read that the God’s men engaged in sexual immorality, and the
false worship that accompanies the sex. What is going on? Are these two events
connected? Or are they randomly placed beside each other?
Much in the Old
Testament is left unexplained, but our Lord explains in Revelation 2:14,
exactly what is happening in this text: Balaam advised Balak to entice the men
of God into sexual sin so that God Himself would strike down the men. The Lord
identifies this evil attack as still going in in the New Testament church.
The
plan of our adversary has not changed! The attack is against the young men,
inciting and stirring up their passions and leading them into sexual sin and
into the judgement of God. The devil can’t touch us, so he leads us into sin so
that God deals with us. Friend, in our culture this odious plan is being
implemented against the ladies as well. Let us not fall prey to our adversary!
Let us the people of God, watch and pray lest we fall.
May we pay heed to the wise words in this children’s song:
O be careful little eyes
what you see
O be careful little eyes
what you see
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in
love
So, be careful little eyes
what you see
{Be Careful Little Eyes, Isaac Lewis}
