John 4:1-42

"The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life."
{Revelation 22:17} (NIV)

We wonder, as we read this verse at the end of the most beautiful passage in the Bible, to have our entrance to this glorious eternity dependent upon a human’s wish seems ludicrous and contrary to the biblical notion of a Sovereign God who seeks out and rescues those who are trapped in spiritual death. But it’s inclusion in the closing comments of God’s eternal Word signifies its importance! Not wishing upon a star, hoping that some unseen force will move on our behalf! NO. Wishing that, results in action by me on my behalf as I draw near to the Lord and drink deeply from the eternal well of the Holy Spirit. You must COME and you must TAKE, but you will only do these things if first you WISH!

John 4 teaches us that this invitation is for those who are not yet saved. It is the invitation of the gospel, given by the Holy Spirit and Christians (the bride) together. Yet those of us who are saved know that this invitation is for all of us who want to persevere in the Lord.

Friend, we need more than anything else God’s grace, power and mercy flowing into our lives, deeply drinking of the spiritual life that flows from His presence in our lives today. We say, of course I WISH for that! Really? Then have we GONE to the Lord this day and TAKEN?
