"There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever."
{Revelation 22:5} (NIV)
Forever is a long time. For ever and ever is even longer. Storybooks used to end with "they lived happily ever after", and as children we understood that to mean that they were happy together as long as they lived. Today’s children probably understand it to mean, that they were happy together as long as they wanted to be together, and when they stopped being happy with each other they moved on to someone else who would make them happy.
Our Lord Jesus, through His servant John, is revealing to us that our future as His brothers and sisters (Mk 3:35), is one of for ever and ever. His plans for us are that we will be with each other and with Him for ever and ever. When we read this section of the Bible, we sigh and yearn to be there now. No more sickness, no more death, no more crying and we say bring it on. But hold on for a second. Think about it. Aren’t there Christians here today that you really don’t even want to spend 5 minutes with? No problem John, you say. They will have changed and I will like them then.
What about our Lord? Aren’t there times now, when we wish He wasn’t around us, when we involve ourselves in activities that we know He would disapprove of? Friend, isn’t it true that if we really want to be with Him forever, we would seek His Presence more in this life, even in what we are doing right now?
